Frankfurt · FRA6

Dlaczego Frankfurt?

The first instance was sold here in November 2014, out of four racks on Hanauer Landstraße — the industrial strip east of the banking towers, where Frankfurt's carriers actually terminate. Six weeks later a PDU we had wired ourselves failed and took two of those racks with it, which is why every rack in the fleet has carried A+B feeds from separate units since. FRA6 is the room every later site was modelled on.

Co obsługuje

Sixty-four peering sessions, more than any other site we run, sitting behind 1.6 Tbit/s of edge capacity. DE-CIX reaches the German, Austrian and Swiss networks directly; KleyReX picks up the regional ones that never joined it. Five upstreams carry whatever is left.

Kompromis

Frankfurt gets hot. In July 2022 outside air hit 39.3 °C, one of three chillers derated, and we shed clock speed on 1,400 instances rather than shed load — CPU-bound work ran about 12% slower for three hours.

Pytania

Pytania o hosting w Niemcy

01Frankfurt or Amsterdam? They look identical on paper.
Both opened in 2014, both sit at 2 ms in-metro, both are Tier IV. Pick Frankfurt if your users are German-speaking or further east, or if you want the densest peering we have. Pick Amsterdam if they are Dutch or Belgian, or if you need a Tor exit — which Frankfurt does not permit. British users belong in London and Nordic ones in Stockholm or Helsinki; neither of these two rooms is the answer to that question.
02Does the Frankfurt summer affect instances every year?
Not every year, but it is the one seasonal risk here. Free-cooling capacity in FRA6 was uprated in spring 2023 after the previous July, and the policy has not changed: we shed clock speed before we shed load, so a hot afternoon costs you throughput and not availability. If that is unacceptable, Stockholm, Helsinki and Reykjavík run cold.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
