Vienna · VIE2

Dlaczego Vienna?

VIE2 is in Floridsdorf, north of the Danube, and has run since 2018. The routing here is shaped by A1: the Austrian incumbent's group footprint runs down through most of the old Habsburg map, so buying transit from it puts Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade closer than a distance table suggests. That is a transit relationship doing work an exchange would normally do, which is unusual enough to be the reason the site exists.

Co obsługuje

Twenty-seven sessions at VIX, where the Austrian networks and a fair share of the neighbouring ones meet. Three milliseconds across the city, and Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana and Zagreb are close enough that one Vienna instance covers all of them without a second deployment.

Kompromis

VIX is the only exchange here, and anything not on it arrives over one of three transit paths. Vienna covers the region broadly rather than any single market deeply: for Polish traffic Warsaw is better, for Romanian traffic Bucharest is, and both of those are ours too.

Pytania

Pytania o hosting w Austria

01Vienna or Frankfurt for South-Eastern Europe?
Frankfurt has sixty-four peering sessions to Vienna's twenty-seven, and for German-speaking audiences it wins on that alone. For Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria the A1 group's regional footprint out of Vienna usually beats a longer path from Frankfurt, and the in-metro figures are 3 ms against 2 ms — a difference nobody in Belgrade will notice.
02Why only one exchange in Vienna?
Because VIX is where the Austrian networks are, and a second Vienna fabric would mostly sell us the same members a second time. Diversity is bought on the transit side here instead: Cogent, A1 and Arelion, on three separate paths out of Floridsdorf.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
