Waarom hosten in IJsland?

Reykjavík is chosen for what it is, not for where it is: Tor exit nodes, mirrors of material that draws complaints, archives, journalism infrastructure. Nobody picks it for round trip. Farice is a long cable and the metro figure is the highest we publish in Europe, so people who need both usually run Amsterdam in front of it.

Juridisch kader

Iceland is in the EEA rather than the EU, so the GDPR applies through national law and Persónuvernd is the supervisory authority. The retention question runs on different machinery: the ePrivacy rules are EEA-relevant, but it is the EFTA Court rather than the Court of Justice that answers here, and the duty written for telecommunications operators is still on the books. We would not describe its reach into hosting as settled. Expression is protected constitutionally, prior restraint included, and that is not something an emailed complaint achieves.

Vragen specifiek voor IJsland

01Does hosting in Iceland change what I pay or which law applies?
The price is the same as every other region. Iceland is in the EEA, so the GDPR applies here through Icelandic law and Persónuvernd supervises it — that governs our processing at the site. Whether it governs yours depends on where you are established and whose users you serve, not on where the disk is. VAT follows where you are rather than where the server is, and outside the EU none is charged at all. Payment is crypto through OxaPay either way.
02Why is Reykjavík one of the four sites where Tor exits are allowed?
Because Farice and the local upstreams will carry the traffic, which is the whole test. Amsterdam, Chișinău and Bucharest are the other three. Run the standard reduced exit policy and publish an abuse contact. Middle relays and bridges need no permission and work at every site we operate, including the ones that will not carry exits.

Vragen

Vragen over hosten in IJsland

01Do I really not have to verify my identity?
Correct. Ordering requires an email address and a payment, and that is the whole list. There is no document upload, no selfie, no phone verification, no address check and no card on file. We have never run identity verification and we do not plan to start — the cheapest way to protect customer documents is to never hold any.
02What do you actually store about me?
Your email address, your invoices, the configuration of your servers, and 72 hours of NetFlow-level connection metadata used only for abuse investigation. Nothing else. When you close the account, all of it is erased within 24 hours except invoices, which accounting law makes us keep for ten years — those hold an invoice name of your choosing and no verified identity.
03Why can I only buy six or twelve months at a time?
Because it is what makes the price possible. Monthly billing means churn, idle capacity kept warm for people who might come back, payment retries and support load. Selling in terms removes all of it, and lets us buy hardware against known demand rather than a forecast. The saving goes straight into the rate card — a twelve-month Base works out around 20% below the six-month rate, and both are below what monthly billing would cost us to offer.
04How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
05Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
06Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
