Sydney · SYD1

Waarom Sydney?

SYD1 is in Alexandria, the inner-south industrial belt where Sydney's network floors sit rather than the CBD. We opened it in 2019, and the shape of the network here is dictated by one fact: Telstra is bought, not peered with, so it appears in the carrier list rather than on the exchange. IX Australia NSW covers the rest. Buyers are usually Australian-facing and arriving from Singapore or Los Angeles.

Wat deze locatie bereikt

Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and most of the eastern seaboard, with Vocus and IX Australia NSW handling the networks that peer and Telstra transit reaching the ones that do not. Arelion carries the trans-Pacific leg to Los Angeles.

De afweging

Australia is a long way from everywhere and no routing decision fixes it. The round trip to Europe is a distance problem; if half your users are European, run a European instance too rather than expecting Sydney to cover both.

Vragen

Vragen over hosten in Australië

01Sydney or Melbourne for one Australian server?
Sydney, if there is only going to be one. It carries 260 Gbit/s against Melbourne's 140, nineteen peers against twelve, and Arelion on the floor alongside Telstra and Vocus — the trans-Pacific leg starts here. Melbourne is bought as a second instance rather than a first, by people who already run Sydney and want the failure domain.
02Australian bandwidth is expensive. Is the traffic allowance smaller here?
The allowance is the same in Sydney as in Frankfurt, and so is the price. Australian transit costs us more than European transit does; we did not put that in the rate card. Inbound is never metered, and if you pass the outbound allowance the port shapes until the term rolls over instead of generating an invoice.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
