Melbourne · MEL1

Waarom Melbourne?

MEL1 is in Port Melbourne, down by the bay among the freight sheds. It is the only site we opened in 2022, the year European power tripled and we ate the difference rather than repricing anyone mid-term — which is roughly why there was only one. Vocus is the primary here, not Telstra, and IX Australia VIC is a different fabric from the Sydney one.

Wat deze locatie bereikt

Victoria, Tasmania and the South Australian corner, plus a straight run up to Sydney. Vocus and IX Australia VIC reach the local networks directly; Telstra transit covers the households the exchange does not.

De afweging

Melbourne is the smaller half of the Australian pair at 140 Gbit/s, and the trans-Pacific cables land in Sydney. Overseas traffic usually crosses the continent before it reaches you — nothing is lost on the way, it simply arrives later, and for anything latency-sensitive from abroad Sydney is the room.

Vragen

Vragen over hosten in Australië

01Does a Melbourne instance protect me from a Sydney outage?
For compute, yes: different building, different upstream mix, different exchange fabric. What it does not do by itself is fail over — you need two instances, replication at the application layer and a DNS record you can move. Region-to-region transfers are a rebuild, not a resize; the disk stays where the metal is.
02Melbourne is Tier III and Sydney is Tier III+. What does that change?
Less redundancy in the facility's own plant, and nothing in what we rack inside it. Every rack in the fleet takes A+B feeds from separate PDUs — a rule we wrote in 2014 after wiring one ourselves and losing half of Frankfurt to it — with N+1 UPS and on-site diesel behind that. The uptime figure we publish is fleet-wide.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
