Run a mail server on a VPS, and have the mail arrive

Self-hosted mail fails on deliverability, not on software. What decides it is a clean IP, working reverse DNS on both address families, and a host that will actually open port 25 — all three of which are policy questions, not technical ones.

Perché ci si trasferisce qui

VPS for a self-hosted mail server

01

Port 25 opens on request, usually within the hour

It is closed on new instances because that is what keeps our ranges off blocklists. Send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients, and it opens — no volume commitment, no separate product.

02

Reverse DNS on v4 and v6, self-service

PTR records are set from the console and propagate in minutes, on both address families. Getting the v6 PTR right is the step most guides skip, and it is the one large providers check.

03

Addresses with no history

IPv4 is assigned from the region's own prefix, and we check reputation before allocation. If an address turns out to be listed anywhere, support swaps it for a clean one at no charge.

04

Mailcow needs more memory than you think

The dockerised stack runs ClamAV, Rspamd, Solr and Dovecot together. Six gigabytes is the practical floor and sixteen is comfortable — the Work plan at €10.40 a month is the sensible starting point.

Domande

Domande frequenti

01Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
02How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
03Are backups included?
Two manual snapshots per instance are free and always available. Scheduled backups are an option priced as 10% of the compute line for weekly and 20% for daily — weekly keeps four restore points in the same country, daily keeps fourteen in a second one. Restores are self-service from the console and take minutes, not a ticket.
04No KYC — so anything goes?
No. No identity checks means we do not care who you are; it does not mean we do not care what leaves our network. Phishing, spam, malware distribution, botnet command-and-control, credential stuffing, outbound attacks and material involving minors get the instance terminated immediately, without refund and without appeal. The acceptable use policy is two pages, written in plain language, and we apply all of it.
