Zurich · ZRH1

Perché Zurich?

ZRH1 is in Glattbrugg, out by the airport, and it came up in 2016 — the same year we published the acceptable use policy in the two-page form it still has. Not a coincidence: writing down what we would and would not do was a precondition for operating where the disclosure rules are this strict. Init7 is on the transit list on purpose, being an ISP whose position is that it does not interfere with traffic.

Cosa raggiunge

Thirty-three sessions between SwissIX and CIXP, the exchange at CERN, which together cover both halves of the country rather than only the German-speaking one. Three milliseconds across the Zurich metro; Init7 carries what is not peered. Southern Germany and northern Italy are short hops from here.

Il compromesso

Zurich shows low stock more often than not, and the reason is floor price rather than demand — Swiss hall space costs what it costs, so we run this room closer to full than most. Check that the size you want is orderable before you plan around it.

Domande

Domande sull'hosting in Svizzera

01What happens if a foreign authority asks about my Zurich server?
We answer orders that are valid in the jurisdiction the machine physically sits in, which here means Swiss ones, and nothing else. What we can hand over is your email address, your invoices and up to 72 hours of NetFlow-level metadata, because that is all we hold. You are told it happened unless we are barred from saying so.
02Is Zurich a good place for a VPN endpoint or a Tor relay?
For a personal WireGuard endpoint, yes — it is one of the sites we point people at for exactly that. Tor relays and bridges are fine here too. Tor exit nodes are not: exits run only in Amsterdam, Reykjavík, Chișinău and Bucharest, and Swiss upstreams are not the place to argue the point.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
