Santiago · SCL1

Perché Santiago?

SCL1 is in Huechuraba, in the business park on the northern edge of the city where the Chilean carriers keep their equipment. It came online in 2021 and is still the newest room we have in the Americas. Chilean last-mile reach runs through the incumbents whether you like it or not, so we buy Entel alongside Cogent and accept the invoice rather than route your users the long way round.

Cosa raggiunge

120 Gbit/s and 11 peers over PIT Chile. That serves the Chilean networks directly instead of hauling them to São Paulo or Miami first, and it puts Peru and the rest of the Pacific coast a short hop away rather than a detour across the continent. It is the western anchor of any South American deployment.

Il compromesso

The furthest south we go in the Americas, and the numbers say so: 5 ms on the metro probe and 120 Gbit/s, the longest round trip and the smallest capacity in the region. European traffic from here is what it is.

Domande

Domande sull'hosting in Cile

01Santiago or São Paulo for South America?
Split it by coast. Chile, Peru and the Pacific side belong here; Brazil and the Atlantic side belong in São Paulo, which has more than twice the capacity and nearly twice the peers. The Andes sit between them, and traffic crossing the continent takes the long way round whichever end you start from.
02Does the Humboldt cable make this a good site for Australia or New Zealand?
Not really. Santiago is where that cable lands, which is why the site is interesting, but a server for Australian or New Zealand users belongs in Sydney or Melbourne. Trans-Pacific from Chile is still an ocean. Pick Santiago because your users are in Chile, not because of what leaves the coast.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
