Warsaw · WAW3

Perché Warsaw?

WAW3 is in Wola, the part of Warsaw that filled with office towers and, underneath them, fibre. It has run since 2017, and at 440 Gbit/s it is the largest hall we have in Central or Eastern Europe. Two exchanges, PLIX and THINX, where Vienna and Sofia each have one — that redundancy is most of why the room works, and the reason we stopped treating Poland as something Frankfurt covers.

Cosa raggiunge

PLIX and THINX together reach almost every Polish network without transit, and Orange PL covers the domestic last mile. Prague, Berlin and Bratislava are short hops, and Frankfurt is close enough that Warsaw works as a genuine second European region rather than a fallback.

Il compromesso

The 2021 route leak happened here: an upstream leaked our prefixes, Warsaw traffic took a 180 ms detour and a third of it blackholed for 41 minutes. Every session has carried RPKI origin validation and a strict prefix limit since.

Domande

Domande sull'hosting in Polonia

01Warsaw or Frankfurt for Polish users?
Warsaw, clearly. PLIX and THINX put Polish eyeball networks a single hop away, which Frankfurt cannot match however large DE-CIX is. Frankfurt only wins if the same instance also has to serve Western Europe well — in which case run Frankfurt as primary and Warsaw as the regional second, rather than compromising on one.
02What changed after the 2021 route leak?
Every BGP session in the fleet now carries RPKI origin validation and a strict prefix limit, which is what stops a leaked announcement being accepted back in. The session that leaked was withdrawn the same day. The fix was not Warsaw-specific, but Warsaw is where we paid for the lesson.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
