Lisbon · LIS1

Perché Lisbon?

LIS1 sits in Parque das Nações, on the estuary in the east of the city, and we opened it in 2021. The reason is upstream of the rack: traffic to São Paulo takes its sea leg from the Portuguese coast whichever Iberian site it starts from, and from here it does not cross the peninsula to get there. GigaPIX is small next to DE-CIX, and it is the only exchange in this country that matters.

Cosa raggiunge

Portuguese eyeball networks are all on GigaPIX, and Altice carries most of the domestic last mile. The rest of the value is Lusophone: Brazilian and West African audiences without a first hop through Spain or France. Fifteen peers, which means the transit legs here do real work rather than mopping up.

Il compromesso

Lisbon is a corner of the continent: anything with a German or Polish audience pays for the fibre back east. With 200 Gbit/s and two upstreams there is not a lot of headroom here either, so keep the European tier in Frankfurt or Madrid and use Lisbon for the Atlantic side.

Domande

Domande sull'hosting in Portogallo

01Lisbon or Madrid for Brazilian traffic?
Madrid is the bigger hall — 360 Gbit/s, twenty-four peers, two exchanges — and it is the shortest hop from Europe to Latin America overall. Lisbon wins when your users are Portuguese-speaking rather than Spanish-speaking, because GigaPIX and Altice reach them directly instead of over transit. If the audience is split, Madrid is the safer default.
02Is there a second Portuguese site to fail over to?
No. Lisbon is the only site we run in Portugal, so an Iberian pair means Lisbon and Madrid — two countries, two exchanges, two upstream mixes. Moving between them is a rebuild rather than a migration, because the disk stays where the metal is and the address belongs to that region's prefix. Support will run the transfer at no charge.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
