Where a dozen subsea cables come ashore, including the ones to Brazil and West Africa.
Lisbon · LIS1
LIS1 sits in Parque das Nações, on the estuary in the east of the city, and we opened it in 2021. The reason is upstream of the rack: traffic to São Paulo takes its sea leg from the Portuguese coast whichever Iberian site it starts from, and from here it does not cross the peninsula to get there. GigaPIX is small next to DE-CIX, and it is the only exchange in this country that matters.
What it reaches
Portuguese eyeball networks are all on GigaPIX, and Altice carries most of the domestic last mile. The rest of the value is Lusophone: Brazilian and West African audiences without a first hop through Spain or France. Fifteen peers, which means the transit legs here do real work rather than mopping up.
The trade-off
Lisbon is a corner of the continent: anything with a German or Polish audience pays for the fibre back east. With 200 Gbit/s and two upstreams there is not a lot of headroom here either, so keep the European tier in Frankfurt or Madrid and use Lisbon for the Atlantic side.
