Paris · PAR3

Why Paris?

PAR3 is in Aubervilliers, just outside the périphérique, where the Paris halls actually sit rather than where the postcode suggests. We opened it in 2015 and bought Orange transit early, because reaching French subscribers reliably has always been less a question of the exchange than of the incumbent. Customers who care about that tend to arrive already knowing it.

What it reaches

France-IX and the Equinix Paris fabric carry forty-four sessions between them, which covers the French hosting and content networks; the incumbents are reached over transit instead. Three milliseconds across Île-de-France, 800 Gbit/s at the edge, and Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille are answered from here rather than from a second French site.

The trade-off

PAR3 is Tier III+, not Tier IV like Frankfurt and London, and Île-de-France power is not cheap — which is why Roubaix exists up on the Belgian border. For anything that does not need French eyeballs, Roubaix does the same job.

Questions

Questions about hosting in France

01Do I need Paris to reach French mobile networks properly?
In practice, yes. The French incumbents peer narrowly and a lot of subscriber traffic only arrives cleanly over transit bought from them, which is why Orange is on our list here and nowhere else in France. Serving French mobile users from Frankfurt works, but you pay for it in round trip on every request.
02Is Paris a sensible entry point for North African users?
It is the best one we have. Maghreb capacity comes ashore at Marseille and backhauls into Paris, so a Paris instance sits at the near end of those paths in a way Frankfurt does not. Further east it stops being true — Milan for Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, Istanbul for the Levant, Dubai for the Gulf.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
