Manchester · MAN1

Why Manchester?

MAN1 is at Kilburn House, on the science park south of the city centre. It opened in 2021 because enough northern traffic was making a round trip to the Docklands to make stopping it worthwhile. IXManchester is a small exchange with the right membership for that job — regional ISPs and the northern universities — and it is the whole reason the room exists.

What it reaches

Four milliseconds across Greater Manchester, on twenty-one sessions at IXManchester and nothing else. Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow are reached without the hairpin south; on an uncached request that is the London round trip saved twice over.

The trade-off

Two upstreams and one exchange. Anything not peered at IXManchester still transits south, so the gain is real for northern eyeball traffic and slight for everything else. At 320 Gbit/s it is the smaller of our two British rooms.

Questions

Questions about hosting in United Kingdom

01London or Manchester?
If your users are in the north-west, Yorkshire or Scotland, Manchester saves them the trip to the Docklands and back. If they are anywhere else in Britain, or if you want peering breadth, London has fifty-two sessions to Manchester's twenty-one and two more upstreams. Manchester is the answer to a latency question, not a cost one.
02Is Manchester the right site for Irish users?
Only if they are a side audience. Manchester reaches Ireland without a hairpin through London, which helps, but Dublin is a site of ours with INEX peering and three upstreams and it will beat Manchester for Irish eyeballs every time. Dublin stock runs low, which is the one reason people end up here instead.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
