Ashburn · IAD3

Why Ashburn?

IAD3 sits on Beaumeade Circle in Loudoun County, farmland that grew data centres instead of houses. One exchange is listed here and one is enough — the peering work was mostly paperwork, because the networks we wanted were already in the building when we arrived in 2017. Two milliseconds on the metro probe is the lowest figure we record anywhere in the Americas, and there are 720 Gbit/s behind it.

What it reaches

720 Gbit/s and 41 peers. Through Equinix Ashburn most large US networks are a cross-connect away rather than a transit hop, which is what makes this the right origin for APIs, CDN back-ends and mail — traffic that goes to other machines rather than to browsers.

The trade-off

Loudoun County is an interconnection point, not a population centre. For users rather than machines, New York is closer to the north-east and Dallas is closer to everyone else — and US law applies to the disk either way.

Questions

Questions about hosting in United States

01Ashburn or New York for a US east-coast server?
Ashburn if the other end of the connection is a machine — 2 ms on the metro probe and Equinix Ashburn behind it. New York if the other end is a person in the north-east, or a broker bridge. New York also carries more capacity, 880 Gbit/s against 720, and more peers.
02Why is only one exchange listed for Ashburn?
Because a second fabric in Loudoun County would mostly buy us the same peers twice. Equinix Ashburn is where the networks already are, and the four carriers on the list — Arelion, Cogent, Lumen and NTT — cover what does not appear there. Peering count is 41, which is high for a single-exchange site.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
