PT · The legal picture

Why host in Portugal?

Lisbon is picked for the Atlantic side of a deployment: origins and mirrors for Portuguese-language audiences, and back ends whose users are in Brazil or West Africa and would otherwise be answered from Madrid with an extra leg of fibre. It is a smaller hall than the northern sites, chosen for the cable head rather than for peering.

The legal picture

The GDPR applies, implemented in national law and supervised by the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados. Portugal's communications-retention statute was struck down by its own Constitutional Court and the replacement has been argued over since, so as of writing the position is genuinely unsettled and we do not build around it either way. A complaint sent to abuse is forwarded to you with its evidence. Removal by us follows a court order, with one standing exception: the conduct in section 1 of the acceptable use policy, which we cut without waiting for anyone.

Questions specific to Portugal

01My audience is Brazilian. Does hosting in Lisbon put the data under EU law?
Yes — the law that applies to an instance is the law of the country the disk sits in, so a Lisbon instance sits under Portuguese and EU law regardless of where the readers are. Whatever obligations you carry towards Brazilian users travel with you rather than with the server, and that part is yours to work out.
02Lisbon or Madrid for Iberian users?
Madrid, usually. It sits on ESPANIX and DE-CIX Madrid and has more capacity, so Iberian eyeball networks are closer in practice. Lisbon earns its place when the traffic is crossing the Atlantic — to Brazil or to West Africa — because it starts at the landing point instead of taking a hop inland first.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Portugal

01Do I really not have to verify my identity?
Correct. Ordering requires an email address and a payment, and that is the whole list. There is no document upload, no selfie, no phone verification, no address check and no card on file. We have never run identity verification and we do not plan to start — the cheapest way to protect customer documents is to never hold any.
02What do you actually store about me?
Your email address, your invoices, the configuration of your servers, and 72 hours of NetFlow-level connection metadata used only for abuse investigation. Nothing else. When you close the account, all of it is erased within 24 hours except invoices, which accounting law makes us keep for ten years — those hold an invoice name of your choosing and no verified identity.
03Why can I only buy six or twelve months at a time?
Because it is what makes the price possible. Monthly billing means churn, idle capacity kept warm for people who might come back, payment retries and support load. Selling in terms removes all of it, and lets us buy hardware against known demand rather than a forecast. The saving goes straight into the rate card — a twelve-month Base works out around 20% below the six-month rate, and both are below what monthly billing would cost us to offer.
04How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
05Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
06Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
