IE · The legal picture

Why host in Ireland?

Dublin gets picked by people whose traffic crosses the Atlantic and who want the European end inside EU law rather than in London: front ends, API gateways, replication endpoints feeding New York. It also serves Irish users directly through INEX. Stock in Clonshaugh runs tight, so check before planning a fleet around it.

The legal picture

Ireland applies the GDPR through the Data Protection Act, with the Data Protection Commission as supervisory authority — the same regulator most of the large American platforms answer to for Europe. The Irish retention regime was rebuilt after the courts found the previous general scheme incompatible with EU law, and now leans on targeted preservation rather than blanket collection; how far that reaches a hosting provider is unsettled, as it is across the EU. Removal of lawful content takes a court order. The actual-knowledge standard a host is judged by comes from the Digital Services Act, so it reads the same here as it does in Frankfurt.

Questions specific to Ireland

01Is Dublin a substitute for London now that the UK sits outside the EU?
For anything that has to stay under EU law, yes — Dublin is the closest room we run to the transatlantic path that is still inside the union. The UK has its own regime, UK GDPR, supervised by the ICO. If neither point matters to your workload, London has more capacity and more peers.
02Why does Dublin show low stock so often?
Because we stop selling on a host once its CPU steal drifts past 3% and migrate instances off it, and Clonshaugh is a smaller room than Frankfurt or Amsterdam, so that removes a visible share of the capacity. It refills when the next hardware lands. Frankfurt and Amsterdam are the usual stand-ins.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Ireland

01Do I really not have to verify my identity?
Correct. Ordering requires an email address and a payment, and that is the whole list. There is no document upload, no selfie, no phone verification, no address check and no card on file. We have never run identity verification and we do not plan to start — the cheapest way to protect customer documents is to never hold any.
02What do you actually store about me?
Your email address, your invoices, the configuration of your servers, and 72 hours of NetFlow-level connection metadata used only for abuse investigation. Nothing else. When you close the account, all of it is erased within 24 hours except invoices, which accounting law makes us keep for ten years — those hold an invoice name of your choosing and no verified identity.
03Why can I only buy six or twelve months at a time?
Because it is what makes the price possible. Monthly billing means churn, idle capacity kept warm for people who might come back, payment retries and support load. Selling in terms removes all of it, and lets us buy hardware against known demand rather than a forecast. The saving goes straight into the rate card — a twelve-month Base works out around 20% below the six-month rate, and both are below what monthly billing would cost us to offer.
04How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
05Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
06Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
