Reykjavík · KEF1

Perché Reykjavík?

KEF1 is out at Ásbrú, near Keflavík rather than in the capital, close to where Farice's fibre leaves the island. It has run since 2020, and it is the site customers name in the order rather than pick off a dropdown — usually because of who can and cannot compel a takedown. Tor exit traffic runs here, which is true of only four rooms in the fleet.

Cosa raggiunge

Farice is the fibre on and off the island and RIX.IS is the domestic exchange; between them Iceland is covered completely. Everyone else is buying jurisdiction rather than milliseconds, and accepting a subsea leg to reach the mainland at all.

Il compromesso

Six milliseconds inside the metro is our highest European figure, and eight peering sessions the fewest of any site we run. Iceland is an island: the path to the mainland is set by the cable, not by us.

Domande

Domande sull'hosting in Islanda

01Is Reykjavík fast enough to serve mainland European users?
It depends what you are serving. Static content and anything asynchronous is fine. An interactive application with continental users will feel the subsea leg, and 140 Gbit/s across eight peers means more of the path is transit than at a mainland site. Most people run Reykjavík for the jurisdiction and keep the latency-sensitive tier elsewhere.
02Can I run a Tor exit node in Iceland?
Yes. Reykjavík is one of four sites where exits are permitted, alongside Amsterdam, Chișinău and Bucharest. We ask for the standard reduced exit policy and a published abuse contact. Complaints go to that contact with the evidence attached; we do not suspend on an unverified report and we do not ask you to justify running a relay.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
