LV · The legal picture

Why host in Latvia?

Riga has been in the fleet since Bucharest opened and the reason people give has not changed: EU law in a room that is not Frankfurt, with Telia on-net into the Baltics and the Nordics. Typical workloads are VPN endpoints, small mail servers, personal infrastructure and Tor middle relays.

The legal picture

Latvia is in the EU, so the GDPR applies alongside the national Personal Data Processing Law, supervised by the Data State Inspectorate. Its electronic communications law carries a retention obligation aimed at licensed communications operators rather than at hosts, and like most of the EU the position has not been resolved since the Court of Justice ruled against blanket retention. A complaint reaches you with its evidence before it reaches anything else, and removal of lawful content is a matter for a court.

Questions specific to Latvia

01Does an EU jurisdiction mean you log more than you would outside one?
Not here. The list is the same in Riga as in Chișinău: an email address, invoices, instance configuration, and 72 hours of NetFlow for abuse work. What EU membership changes is who can compel us and through what process — a Latvian court order, answered under Latvian law, because Latvia is where the disk is.
02Why run Riga when Warsaw already covers the region?
Warsaw carries more capacity and more peers, and it is the shorter path from Poland. Riga is the local room: LIX and Telia on-net, inside Latvia, for people who want the instance in the country its users are in. Running both gives you two EU countries on two separate exchanges.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Latvia

01Do I really not have to verify my identity?
Correct. Ordering requires an email address and a payment, and that is the whole list. There is no document upload, no selfie, no phone verification, no address check and no card on file. We have never run identity verification and we do not plan to start — the cheapest way to protect customer documents is to never hold any.
02What do you actually store about me?
Your email address, your invoices, the configuration of your servers, and 72 hours of NetFlow-level connection metadata used only for abuse investigation. Nothing else. When you close the account, all of it is erased within 24 hours except invoices, which accounting law makes us keep for ten years — those hold an invoice name of your choosing and no verified identity.
03Why can I only buy six or twelve months at a time?
Because it is what makes the price possible. Monthly billing means churn, idle capacity kept warm for people who might come back, payment retries and support load. Selling in terms removes all of it, and lets us buy hardware against known demand rather than a forecast. The saving goes straight into the rate card — a twelve-month Base works out around 20% below the six-month rate, and both are below what monthly billing would cost us to offer.
04How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
05Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
06Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
