Why Riga?
RIX1 is on Mūkusala, on the left bank of the Daugava, and it has not needed to grow much since 2016. Two carriers, one exchange, 180 Gbit/s — the site was built small and stayed small, because the Latvian market does not ask for more. The trade is deliberate: a modest hall and a short supplier list, and the bill reflects both.
What it reaches
LIX reaches Latvian networks directly and Telia carries the Baltic ring, so Estonian and Lithuanian users sit a hop or two away. Beyond that, fourteen peers means Riga leans on transit — it serves the Baltics properly and the rest of Europe adequately.
The trade-off
Riga gets recommended for privacy work often enough that this is worth saying plainly: Tor exits are not permitted here. Only Amsterdam, Reykjavík, Chișinău and Bucharest carry them. Middle relays and bridges are fine anywhere.

Questions about hosting in Latvia
01Riga or Chișinău for a privacy-sensitive project?
They are different tools. Riga is inside the EU, which gives you a predictable legal process and a hall with more capacity and more peers than Chișinău has. Chișinău sits outside EU instruments entirely, which is the whole point of it, and it permits Tor exits. Pick Riga for law you can rely on, Chișinău for law that does not reach you.
02Has Riga ever had an outage?
Nothing since it opened in 2016 appears in the public incident log, and that log includes events with no customer impact at all — the New York generator run in September 2025 is in there because we publish everything within 48 hours. That is a description of the record, not a promise about next year.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
