Helsinki · HEL1

Why Helsinki?

HEL1 is in Pitäjänmäki, a working industrial district in west Helsinki, and it has run since 2020. The heat-recovery tie is also a constraint — the hall cannot be picked up and moved somewhere cheaper, because it has to sit where the pipework is. Everything else about the room follows from that: it is small, it is where it is, and it will not grow much.

What it reaches

FICIX covers Finnish networks directly and Telia carries the short hop across the Gulf to Estonia, which makes Helsinki a sensible European end for Baltic routes when Riga's 180 Gbit/s is not enough room. Cogent handles the rest of the continent.

The trade-off

Finland is a long way from anywhere south of Berlin, and the fabric here is small — one exchange, eighteen peers — so more of a continental path ends up on transit than it would from Frankfurt. If your users are spread across the EU rather than around the Gulf of Finland, take Frankfurt.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Finland

01What does the district heating loop mean for me in practice?
Nothing you will notice on the instance, and that is rather the point. Waste heat leaves the hall as hot water into the local network instead of into the sky, which is why this is our lowest-carbon site. It does not make the server cheaper — every region is the same price — and it does not change performance either way.
02Helsinki or Stockholm for users in the Baltic states?
Neither, if you can avoid it: Riga sits in the Baltics and reaches them directly over LIX. Helsinki is the better fallback for Estonia, because the Gulf crossing is short. Stockholm is the better fallback for Lithuania and for anything that also needs Nordic reach. Warsaw is the fourth option and the largest hall of the four.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
