Chișinău · KIV1

Why Chișinău?

KIV1 is in Ciocana, on the east side of Chișinău, and it has run since 2017. At 120 Gbit/s it is as small as our halls get, on Orange MD and Cogent and a single fabric. It is also the only room where the pre-sales questions consistently arrive before the order rather than after it, and they are almost never about hardware.

What it reaches

MD-IX reaches Moldovan networks and Orange MD covers the domestic last mile; Cogent carries everything west. Romanian and Ukrainian traffic crosses the same fibre that serves Bucharest, which is why the two pair well — one outside EU instruments, one inside them.

The trade-off

Nine peers and 120 Gbit/s is the least capacity of any European site we run, and being outside the EU cuts both ways: no EU instrument reaches your data here, and none protects it either.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Moldova

01Is Moldova actually offshore?
In the sense that matters, yes: the disk sits outside EU instruments and Moldovan law applies to it rather than the law of wherever you are. In the sense usually sold, no — it is a short hop from Bucharest on ordinary European fibre, not a rack in a jurisdiction nobody can find on a map.
02What happens if someone in the EU orders my Chișinău server taken down?
We respond to orders valid in the jurisdiction the server physically sits in and to nothing else, which here means Moldova. A foreign order gets no action from us. Complaints are forwarded to you with the evidence and 24 hours to answer, and when a valid order does arrive we tell you unless we are legally barred from saying so.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
