Hong Kong · HKG1

Why Hong Kong?

HKG1 is in Tsuen Wan, out in the New Territories rather than on the island, because floor space and power there cost what they should. HKIX, which a university runs rather than a carrier, is the fabric everything in the territory meets on, and PCCW and NTT do the rest. We opened in 2018. People choose it when their users are in the mainland and an ICP filing is not on the table.

What it reaches

Hong Kong itself, Taiwan, the Philippines and southern China. PCCW is the path most mainland traffic takes and HKIX handles the local networks; NTT and Cogent carry the rest. For Singapore-side South-East Asia, Singapore is still closer.

The trade-off

The last leg into the mainland belongs to a Chinese carrier, not to us. We can put you one hop from HKIX; what happens after the border crossing is theirs, and peak-hour behaviour there is outside our control.

Questions

Questions about hosting in Hong Kong SAR China

01Will a Hong Kong VPS work for users inside mainland China?
Usable, and not the same as hosting inside the mainland — we run no site there and do not intend to. Nothing in Hong Kong needs an ICP filing, which is why people end up here rather than in Shenzhen. Before you commit to a term, ping the site's IP from the province and the carrier your users actually use, at the hour they actually use it: the answer moves by both, and that leg is not ours.
02Why does Hong Kong show low stock so often?
Two reasons. Floor space in the territory is finite and we buy it in racks, not in cages we can extend on a phone call. And when a host drifts past three per cent CPU steal we stop selling on it and move instances off, which surfaces as low stock rather than as a slow server. Singapore is the usual fallback.
03How many IP addresses do I get?
One dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6 with every plan. Up to eight extra IPv4 addresses can be added at €1.20 each per month, assigned from the region's own prefix so geolocation stays consistent. A routed /48 of IPv6 is €2 a month if you are running your own network behind us.
04Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, on every plan, with no separate charge and no traffic threshold. Volumetric attacks are absorbed by hardware scrubbers at the edge and mitigation engages in under four seconds. The advanced tier adds layer-7 scrubbing and rules you write yourself, which matters for game servers and public APIs but not for much else.
05Is port 25 open? Can I run a mail server?
Port 25 is closed by default on new instances and opened on request — send a ticket saying what you are sending and to roughly how many recipients. It usually takes under an hour. Custom reverse DNS on both v4 and v6 is self-service from the console, which is the part that actually determines whether your mail lands.
06Which region should I pick?
The one closest to your users, not to you. Every location costs the same, so there is no reason to compromise. The locations page lists median round trip from residential probes in each metro, and there is a live latency test on every site page. If you are unsure, Frankfurt and Amsterdam reach the most people in the fewest milliseconds.
07Can I move an existing server to another country?
You can deploy a replacement in the new region and migrate, and support will run the transfer for you at no charge if you ask. What we cannot do is move an instance between regions in place — the disk stays where the metal is, and the IP address belongs to that region's prefix.
